Mass Effect: Tell me another story about the shepherd

 The Return Of The King

If you told me earlier this year that the day after Cyberpunk 2077 came out I'd be thinking more about Mass Effect rather than Johnny Silverhand et al. I, like many would think you a fool.

Whilst, FOR THE RECORD I am enjoying Cyberpunk (despite the many inexcusable bugs etc.) that is the situation I find myself in. Honestly, I was more than happy with the announcement of the Mass Effect legendary edition an excuse to play through Mass Effect again is enough for me. So, when I found out that not only was a brand new Mass Effect game announced at the game awards last week, but it was revealed to continue the story from Mass Effect 3 (or at least it will in some form, but we'll get to that later) I lost my absolute shit.

A million questions immediately flooded my mind, did Shephard survive? How much time has passed? Which ending is canon? Did Garrus finish his calibrations? If you've seen the trailer, you'll know that essentially no information is confirmed other than the fact it is indeed a new Mass Effect game and 'will continue' (the trailers words, not mine) the story. So, I thought it would be fun to act like a typical dork on the internet and throw out some suggestions as to what I  wanna see in a new Mass Effect.

So just in case you haven't seen the trailer, we don't see all that much for the majority of it, but it does end with an older looking Dr Liara T'soni retrieving a piece of armour that sure looks like it belongs to commander Shephard. That's it, that's the trailer and I still lost my mind

1.) For the love of god I don't want to be a human anymore.

-Look I would never claim to speak for the entire Mass Effect fandom, but I think I will say that I DO think that the ability to play as a different species in a new ME game is something we all want. There was nothing wrong with playing as a human in the first 4-- I mean 3, there have only been 3 Mass Effect video games (please, don't fight me on this) but it's time for a change up. Denial aside, we've had our fair share of seeing the Mass Effect universe from humanity's perspective, it'd be great to be able to see a fresh perspective. Maybe after Shepherds heroic sacrifice humanity has become a dominant force in the galaxy and side lined other species?- Just a thought (please hire me Bioware). I don't really care how they set it up, I just want to be something other than a human. I appreciate that there's like a dozen different species in Mass Effect and one of them is a floating Jelly Fish (seriously) so I don't need every single species as an option, but maybe just the council races? Just the four main council races? It's not as if there's another Bioware game where there are 4 fantasy races to choose from. Guys, if you haven't guessed it, I'm being sarcastic, there totally is a game like that, it's called Dragon Age. But seriously, lets have some more variety in our character options.

2.) Pick a canon ending for the slideshow

-Obviously, Mass Effect gained popularity for being a game wherein players decisions had potentially massive ramifications in how the story progressed - which is exactly why the ending was so poorly received. Now, ending controversy aside, I think it's crucial to make a decision about which ending is canon if we're going to get a meaningful continuation of the story. No I'm not going to examine all the different possibilities that each of the different Mass Effect 3 endings could offer as a setup should one of them be chosen as canon because that would be too long and honestly probably just make me mad about Mass Effect 3's ending again. My point is that if Bioware are going really move the story forward, they're gonna have to accept that some people aren't gonna like the canon ending they choose, there's just simply no point in trying to please everyone and tip toe around EXACTLY what happened to Shepherd and The Reapers. I have no idea what ending they should pick, but let's be perfectly honest, it really doesn't matter that much, it was a terrible ending, even with the slideshow DLC.

3.) Old Friends

-Hear me out on this one. I am well aware that given the trailer shows Liara T'soni, an Asari who can live for around 1,000 years at an advanced age, it is EXTREMELY likely that all of Shepherds friends (with the exception of a few blessed with long life) are long gone. This doesn't mean we can't see the effect they had on their own people, or the galaxy as a whole though. Mordin Solus *SPOILERS AHEAD GOOD GRAVY AVOID IF YOU DON'T WANT ME:3 SPOILED* sacrificed himself to cure the genophage- a plague that his own people created (or at least he does depending on your choices but honestly, if you didn't cure the genophage, I hate you). Witch actions like that, it seems pretty likely that him and plenty of Shepherds other former crew will have become as legendary as the Commander themselves. Basically, I want a Garrus statue in the middle of the citadel and if you tell me you don't want that your not just lying to me, you're lying to yourself. Seriously though, seeing how much of an impact the rest of the Normandy crew had an effect on their own species/the galaxy as a whole would be awesome.

These are just a few suggestions, I have more but I felt like these are the main things I want to see. Overall, if it wasn't clear, I love Mass Effect, I love it so much and regardless of Andromeda... existing, I'm glad to see Mass Effect back.

Thanks for reading... Keelah Se'lai (sorry, not sorry)
